The Digital Intelligence & Innovation (DI2) Accelerator is the institutional home of Washington University’s Digital Transformation initiative. By supporting researchers, equipping students and mid-career learners with digital competencies, and working to optimize computational infrastructure, the accelerator is leading the charge to make WashU a trailblazer in the digital domain.
Using a hub and spoke approach, we are forging relationships at all levels across the university and beyond to build a community of practice around digital tools and competencies with collaborators including WashU IT, University Libraries, Bernard Becker Medical Library, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Transdisciplinary Institute in Applied Data Sciences (TRIADS), and more.

Our Focus Areas
Research | Teaching & Learning | Operations
Research
We support digital-first innovation by amplifying the activities of WashU researchers working on high-impact digital projects.
- Our Digital Solutions Studio provides professional software development services to researchers looking to bring their projects to life in online and digital spaces. With best-in-class functionality and design, researchers are more likely to attract future funding to their projects.
- We facilitate interdisciplinary projects and advise teams on how to strengthen their Here & Next seed funding proposals so they’re more likely to be awarded grant money.
- In collaboration with the McKelvey School of Engineering, the DI2 Accelerator is developing a strategic roadmap for AI research and practice across all academic units.
Teaching & Learning
We are taking steps to embed digital competencies into training throughout the institution at all levels.
- The DI2 Accelerator works with the Future Design School to assess and analyze WashU’s digital competencies, identifying potential areas of need and growth.
- We consult on the creation of new educational tracks and assist in launching digital-based programs in order to recruit applied computation and data science trainees to WashU.
Operations
Working in collaboration with WashU IT, the DI2 Accelerator informs the design and operations of data and computing infrastructure at WashU, positioning the university as a “living laboratory” for Digital Transformation.
- We conduct and support environmental analyses designed to address research computing and data analytics needs at a university-wide level.
- We collaborate with WashU IT and other key leaders to create and implement AI technology governance that aligns with university mission areas, and harness the power of emerging AI technologies for research, education, and patient care.
- We assist in the selection and implementation of enterprise digital systems, including the faculty expertise profiling system with the Office of the Provost.
